I think what people don't appreciate is that although the actual exam papers themselves are not as hard (ooh controversial I know) some of these kids are studying 15 subjects for GCSE and 6 subjects for A level. The problem is they are strectched too thin and so they end up not retaining anything. I am having to help undergrads with really basic priciples of maths (and they are doing maths degrees).
