I would say an extra hour of both maths and english is a fine idea.
It is probably just enough to consolidate any tricky subjects. I would take a look at the syllabus for all the subjects he is taking and go through the content with him. Make sure that any coursework is up to date and handed in. Christmas holidays is a great time to set out a revision schedule as there is still plenty of time left.
