I agree with totbgirl you should get a feel for the person yourself and call in references. I don't like to alarm anyone but people slip through the CRB crack all the time. (Ian Huntly?!?)
Anyone working in a school should be checkable. You can ring the school and politlely enquire whether they actually work there.
