Default Open University instead of Uni

I've been looking at the OU as an alternate route to gaining a degree and I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts. I thought I could be gaining real work experience and earning some money whilst I get my degree. In fact I think it would be really beneficial. Can you study at the OU from abroad?

I have an OU degree and I am thinking about encouraging my son to do it instead of going to college. At least then, as you say he could earn some money instead of getting into debt. would he miss out on university life though, I wonder?

Having been to a Campus university I can definately reccommend it. However if the financial pressures mean that going to UNi is going to cause you strees or financial hardship, do an OU degree. My neighbour's son has just completed his and he is debt free and has work experience to boot.

My advice? Go to a campus university. The only benefit to an OU degree is being able to study when you want. If you have a full time job it is unlikely you will have the time to complete the degree in 3 years. I know the pressures of money are hard for most, but the life experience you will gain from being at uni will be invaluable. Not to mention fun!

This is a bit of a hot potato. Whatever is said someone will jump on the defensive. To be honest unless you have a place at a good university you may as well do an OU degree. It will only suit you though if you are very organised.

If I had the chance to do it over I would get my experience in the world of work. and OU degree would have suited me down to the ground. I think it is a great idea for everyone not just the financially challenged.

Depends entirely what yo are studying. I would imagine if you wanted to do accountancy or IT, th OU route would be good. Perhaps even English or maths. Any vocational sort of job, I would consider campus, just for the contacts you make for later on if anything else.
