Default Education System in the United Kingdom

The education system in the United Kingdom is one of the most advanced in the world. The education system is divided into primary, secondary, further and higher education. The schooling age for a child as specified by the Government is 5 to 16 years. A child is required to start attending school after the fifth birthday. The sessions start either on 31st of March, August and December. The exit age for schooling is the last Friday of the month of June after their 16th birthday. With such a structured education it is no wonder that Britain has one of the highest literacy rates in the world. Students are transferred from the primary school to secondary school by the time they reach the age of 11 years. There is also a system of middle school for students when they reach the age of 8 or 9 years. There are 4 stages which correspond to a child’s age. The Key Stage 1 is for children who are 5 to 7 years, stage 2 is for students between the age of 7 and 11, stage 3 for students between the age of 11 to 14 years of age and stage 4 for students between the age of 14 to 16 years old. At the end of each stage students are required to clear the National Curriculum tests.

The schools in England are regulated by the School Standards and Framework Act 1998. The three different kinds of schools in England are primarily community schools, foundation schools and voluntary schools. In community schools the local authority employs the school staff and has the responsibility of admitting the students. The foundation schools are maintained by the governing body and they have the primary responsibility of admitting the students in the school. A voluntary school may be run by a church and the governing body is responsible for admitting the students in the school. There are also voluntary schools, Voluntary schools and nursery schools in the UK. Specialized schools in UK teach students disciplines such as arts, business and enterprise, engineering, humanities, sports, technology and other subjects.

Other types of schools include city technology colleges which are funded directly by the Government and offer vocational training to students. Academies are public funded schools which offer high standard of education by adopting specialized approach to management and overall governance of the schools. People Referral Schools (PRUs), Secure Training Unit, Local Authority Secure Units, Grammar Schools, Non Maintained Special Schools and Independent schools complete the school education system in the United Kingdom.

The higher education system in the United Kingdom educates 1.8 million students presently. The Universities are funded by the Government which routes the funds through funding councils. International students, non-EU students and students who are not residents of the United Kingdom pay different tuition fees for studying in UK colleges. The Department for Education and Skills is the controlling authority of the education system. The education system in the UK is advanced and attracts thousands of students from all over the world.
