Question Should you get a tutor for the 11+

My friend's son is studying for his 11 Plus Exam and has a year to go before he takes his exam. They could really do with at least a partial scholarship. ( a lot of pressure on him I know) think it is too early. Is it right to get a tutor anyway as they are primarily intelligence tests.

They are not intelligence tests. The private sector 11+ is not a true measure of intelligence but a measure of where wou have been to primary school and how much coaching you have had. If your friend's son has the potential to earn a scholarship you should get someone to show him how the Verbal reasoning and nonverbal reasoning tests are structured. It is possible to learn hiw to take these tests and score highly. Otherwise tralling through the bind assessment papers should help.

I would recommend getting a specialist to help with the 11+. It is very specific knowledge needed for these tests.

THe 11+ tests are just a selection tool for the private sector. They ar enot intelligence tests. A formula for answering the questions on the NVR tests can be taught. There is no such thing as a true intelligence test as all tests have bias by virtue of the format they are delivered in.

Everyone gets a tutor for the 11+ and the 13+. If you haven't been taught these at achool or have a tutor you are at a serious disadvantage. I had almost forgotten about these!

Thanks, that is really helpful. I will let my friend know. I avoided the whole 11+ thing with my own son as I thought it would be too streesful at that age.
