Default Essential reading for 2008

Anyone have any good books, education related of course, that they might recommend?

I would recommend:

Art of Possibility, The: Transforming Professional and Personal Life
by Rosamund Stone Zander & Benjamin Zander

Folow rule number six. That rule is to 'lighten up'!

Getting the Buggers to Behave -Sue Cowley

This book is fantastic! I really can't recommend it enough. An excellent tool for any teacher who wants sensible advice on improving their classroom management. Advice that actually helps. Plus it is an amusing easy read.

I love the Sue Cowley books. I would second the above and add

Getting the Buggers to Think - Sue Cowley
Amazon.co.uk: Getting the Buggers to Think: Books: Sue Cowley

Lots of the stuff we do as tutors is getting students to learn by rote but this really helps with what learning is all about. Worth a read even for parents.

Children's Errors in Maths: Understanding Common Misconceptions - Alice Hansen

An interesting book looking at teaching from another angle (no pun intended). Understanding why children/anyone make specific errors can help you to find solutions to problem areas. Good read. highly recommend.

The e-assessment handbook - Geoffrey Crisp
This is a largely practical book whose main aim is to lecturers with a greater awareness of e-assessment techniques and programs, and the uses to which these might be put. Interesting for setting up online quizzes etc and the validitiy.

Try rereading all those textbooks that are gathering dust on the shelf. It is an eye opener. Then save what you think is relevant and donate the rest to charity.

Essential Motivation in the Classroom - by Ian Gilbert

Full of common sense, which is a great thing and quite lacking in the classroom these days.
